Maumelle was cited as one of the 10 Best US Communities with Great Ideas for Seniors in the “2006 Maturing of America Study”The City of Maumelle was cited as one of the 10 Best US Communities with Great Ideas for Seniors in the “2006 Maturing of America Study” by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging. The report stated that the inclusion of Maumelle was due to the creation of a Senior Services Department to address seniors’ transportation, educational, social and recreational needs in a compassionate and efficient manner. The city opened the Senior Wellness Center in January of 2006 to increase Active Aging, Lifelong Learning, Transportation, and Volunteer Opportunities for Individuals over the age of 50. Active Aging- The newly opened Senior Wellness Center overlooks Lake Valencia that features an outdoor paved walking trail. The center hosts a cardio room full of state of the art equipment including treadmills, recumbent bikes, elliptical trainers, and recumbent steppers. Low impact aerobic and yoga classes are held daily. Lifelong Learning-The University of Central Arkansas, in partnership with the City of Maumelle, host senior computer classes on site at the Senior Wellness Center. College credit is available upon class completion. The center also offers task-specific computer classes, two levels of watercolor classes, medical and educational workshops presented by local hospitals, civic classes and presentations, cooking clubs, and AARP safe driving courses. Transportation- Non-Emergency Medical Transportation-The City of Maumelle in partnership with Faith in Action-Counting on Each Other, Inc. provides complimentary non-emergency medical transportation for ambulatory individuals over the age of 50. Non-emergency medical transportation requests may be received no later than five business days before the appointment. Shuttle Service-New Service-Now available for individuals over the age of 50 residing in the city limits of Maumelle. Participants must make prior arrangements with the center or call a minimum of 30 minutes prior to departure. Recreational trips are also scheduled each month. The Senior Wellness Center is open Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Weekday lunches are available beginning at 11:30 a.m. Memberships are available for purchase at the Lakeside Desk.
